Wilmore, KY – February 6, 2009. On January 29th, Cre8tive Group, a Wilmore-based marketing communications company, hosted its 3rd annual “Be Inspiring” event at the Hilary J. Boone center on the University of Kentucky's campus. Chad Crouch, Cre8tive Group's President and CEO, described the event as “an evening focused on the role of images in inspiring people to action.”
Dr. Lee Todd greeted the guests saying, “These are the types of events that we want to host. We have a tremendous opportunity to continue to improve the role Kentucky can play in the fields of technology and communications. We are committed to providing our students with the best opportunities to learn and grow so that they can lead in these areas in the future.”
The evening's keynote speakers, brothers Jeff and Peter Hutchens, work as a freelance photographer and filmmaker, respectively. They have both traveled the world working for clients such as National Geographic, Discovery Channel, CNN and Time Magazine.
During the evening, they shared stories of their adventures including shooting photos of polar bears in the Arctic for CNN and filming scenes for the Discovery Channel series Lockdown while facing some of the most violent prison inmates in the United States.
A Pack of Marlboros Will Get You Anywhere
Jeff Hutchens came to realize that “putting yourself in the middle of the situation” is the only way to capture the emotion and mood of an event. His goal is to communicate the essence of an important moment.
In order to accomplish this, Jeff traveled to about 30 countries in 2008 alone. He faced extreme temperatures ranging from negative 30 degrees up to 120 degrees, as well as a case of the “creeping eruption” parasite.
Along with weather extremes and sickness, Jeff deals with corruption and disorganization in many foreign countries. Even though he doesn't smoke, he carries a pack of Marlboro cigarettes because he has learned that “an American cigarette is often they key to opening locked doors overseas; they can help get you in anywhere.”
Find Your Passion
Peter Hutchens is a freelance cameraman, producer and director. He recently worked on an Oscar nominated documentary, War Dance, which is set in Uganda.
Peter has seen the best and worse of the human condition. He prefers to work in documentary filmmaking because of the opportunity to humanize each story. “If you just see people as statistics or as another tragic story, then you don't really connect. But each person's story has common themes we can all understand and that is how I create authentic and inspirational stories.”
The Best Way to Explore is to Get Lost
One of the highlights of the evening was watching clips from Lost In China, the speakers’ new TV series on the National Geographic International Channel.
During the production of this show, both Jeff and Peter had a chance to step in front of the camera and document their unique occupations while working together. Their key to a successful travel adventure show was to simply have fun in the process.
As Peter Hutchens stated, “A sense of discovery will allow you to adjust and find the hidden moments that connect the most powerfully.”
